Planting & Care

Planting Instructions: When you’re ready to plant your Muskogee Crape Myrtle, start by choosing an area with at least 6 to 8 hours of sunlight per day. It also prefers to grow in well-drained soil but is adaptable to several different types of soil.

After choosing your location, dig a hole that’s two or three times the width of your Muskogee’s root ball. Place the tree in the hole, tamp down the soil and then water.

Fertilizer: Feed your Muskogee Crape with a well-balanced fertilizer during early spring.

Watering: Water your Muskogee Crape Myrtle deeply and regularly (about once per week) during its first growing season to establish the tree’s roots. Once it’s established, you can reduce frequency as long as the soil doesn’t dry out excessively.

If you’re not sure when to water, check the tree’s soil. Muskogees are ready to be watered when their surrounding soil is dry down to about 2 or 3 inches.

Pruning: Young Muskogees may need to be thinned during late winter to early spring. But when you prune, leave at least 3 to 7 main trunks or canopy branches. Only prune suckers from older trees, or any dead or diseased areas.
