Planting & Care

Location: The Eugenia poodle shrub can be grown in USDA plant hardiness zones 9 to 11 but is also commonly used as decorative, pot grown plant. The shrub grows rapidly at about four feet per year until it reaches a height of nearly 4-6 feet with a comparable width. Some species grow up to 35 feet if not pruned. However, when pruned in a ‘poodle’ shape the shrub s growth and shape are maintained indefinitely.

Planting Instructions: Choose a planting location that provides full sun and well-draining soil. The shrub will grow in partial sun but its growth rate might be slowed.

The Eugenia poodle shrub prefers slightly acidic soil. Amend the soil before planting with a generous amount of organic matter if there is poor drainage or to adjust the soil’s acidity. Till the organic matter into the soil at a depth of 18 inches. Remove all rocks from the soil and discard. Dig a hole that is twice as large in diameter as the shrub’s root ball and just as deep. Mix a general amount of bone meal into the soil. Place the shrub’s root ball into the hole. Fill in the planting hole with the bone meal and soil mixture. Tamp the soil down around the shrub’s roots to remove all air pockets. Do not plant the tree’s trunk below the soil’s line. Water the shrub thoroughly after planting.

Container Planting Instructions: The Eugenia poodle shrub will grow in a container as a patio plant or indoors in a sunny south or west facing window. If full sun cannot be afforded for the plant indoors, fluorescent lighting can be used.

Choose a pot that is twice the diameter of the Eugenia’s root system. The pot should have drainage holes in the base to allow water to flow freely away from the shrub’s roots. Use a general purpose potting soil and amend it with ample handfuls of sand to make it porous. Place two to three inches of the soil sand mixture into the base of the pot and gently spread the shrub’s roots across the soil. Fill the pot with the soil sand. Leave an inch of space between the soil’s topline and the rim of the pot. Water the shrub thoroughly to remove air pockets and settle the soil.

Irrigation: Water the Eugenia consistently for the first two months after planting. Keep the soil moist but not overly saturated. Once the Eugenia has established itself, it can usually subsist off rainfall unless there is a severe drought

Fertilizer: Fertilize the Eugenia in the spring, summer, and fall using a half a cup of organic, balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10. Water the fertilizer thoroughly into the soil.

Pruning: In order for the Eugenia to grow in a poodle shape, it must be trained and pruned. Prune the Eugenia in the spring and summer months. Remove only a few inches of growth per pruning season to shape the shrub. Prune the branches from the lower half of the shrub’s central stems and leave the top growth to form a poodle top. If being grown as a hedge, multiple trimmings will be needed. Typically you will prune up to six times to maintain a hedge.
